Miss Trinidad & Tobago Fashion Show and After-Party

The Miss Trinidad & Tobago UK fashion show and after-party hosted by Angela Cox at Wessex House, Clapham on 25th November 2008 was highly spectacular and well deserved a larger attendance. As an up coming model I have not only attended events but also participated in different fashion events. One thing I will not fail to forget was the creativity of this particular show.

The models who included finalists from both Miss Trinidad and Tobago UK, Top Model of Colour, the recent Caribbean Model Search, Nadia Simba (Tanzania), Monque Nelson (India/ Jamaican), Shareena Swinscoe  (English/Jamaican), Allana Stoll (Portugal), Zaina Armad (Uganda), Cheyvonne Phillips (Trinidad), Michel Superside and many more all modelled wears by Fashion Nature designed by Rosa Grant, Inn Collection (Trinidad), Mahale Designs, Butterfly Candy River Isles, You Me We, wears loaned by Jag's of Clapham Junction, Osuns Designs, amongst others (sections: swimwear, African, party/evening, creative, accessories.

The evening began with light refreshments on sale Chutney Food, Roti, Ham, Pasties and drinks from the Bar. The entertainment was opened by models styling designs portraying seven deadly sins, recycling wear which the models themselves designed, and finally a display of African, evening, bashment, party and swim wears. The seven deadly sins comprised lust, anger, envy, greed, wrath, vanity and pride; the depiction of pride struck me as being particularly forceful. Pride is considered the original and most serious of the seven deadly sins, and, indeed, the ultimate source from which the others arise. It is identified as a desire to be more important or attractive than others, failing to give compliments to others though they may be deserving of them, and excessive love of self.

The models designing their own recycling were remarkable. The audience had a chance to participate and choose who won the prize for the best-recycled wear. The entries varied with models portraying Adam and Eve, Black refuse bubble bin bag with coco-cola, Egyptian Beauty, rags to riches, Pirates of the Caribbean. The black refuse bin bag stole the audience vote. This is obviously important ‘waste not want what’ as it taught everyone the importance of recycling.

The evening ended a raffle ticket draw that would help to support youths in Peckham with development initiatives that would overcome Gun and Knife crime.

UK Zambians - Second Issue Release Party
Warm haven from the heavy downpour

The UK Zambians Second Issue release party on Friday 30th November provided a welcome and appropriate start to the many similar events which will be taking place between now and towards the end of the year. It was held at the Jolly Fisherman, the only Zambian in the UK, at Barking and gave a warm and entertaining haven from the heavy downpour outside.

The special guests included Mr Rejoice Lukumba – the Press Officer of the Zambian High Commission, Justina Mutale – organiser of the Miss Zambian UK beauty pageant, Maria Sakala, Tina Mutombo – Miss Malaika UK – and her deputy Swakina Phiri, Henry Mubi the dj, and many more.

Press Officer Lukuma has been in this country for just three weeks: he spoke highly of the UK Zambian community, for whom, in his speech, he covered issues of great importance. As he had expected that the event would be modestly attended Mr Lukuma was astonished at the number of people who had braved the atrocious weather to be there. Maria Sakala received  a Community Award.  She and Miss Malaika UK 2007 were called upon to address the audience. The evening ended with several photo-opportunities for Uncle Ronnie, the official photographer, and Ms Sakala and Justina Mutale

Working Together To Reduce Serious Youth Violence

Uchenna Lends Her Voice in Support

Uchenna Obika, 18th Miss Caribbean & Commonwealth, has expressed her support for the conference “Working Together To Reduce Serious Youth Violence” held by the Metropolitan Police Service and London-based charity WAVE (Worldwide Alternatives to Violence.

Uchenna, a Law student who has chosen to make the awareness of the effects of Gun Crime (and ways of reducing and eliminating Gun Crime) the theme of her term-of-office, has offered these thoughts ahead of her forthcoming press conference.

            EVERY DAY SOMEBODY IS KILLED

Think of the family, friends and community

A certain Samaritan came to the man’s aid

Everyday there seems to be somebody in the news, a victim: who was a son or a daughter, a brother or a sister, a friend, a lover, in some cases a father or a mother, who is famous for being killed.

I dedicate my comments to the mothers and fathers, family, friends and communities, who have been affected by the rising epidemic of gun crime. I cannot say that I know what you are going through, I can only imagine, yet that is still not even close. But, I know that what we do share is a dream that sooner rather than later, this plague called gun crime will end.  In the parable of The Good Samaritan, it took two people to pass by a man who was left wounded and half dead by thieves. Until, a certain Samaritan came to the man’s aid.

Today, a lot of “Samaritans” are coming together to devise a plan on how to solve the issues surrounding Britain’s youth. I am very pleased that this meeting is taking place and I only hope that the questions posed by our communities concerning gun crime can be answered.

I do however; feel that the community needs to embrace this movement, because the plans of the Metropolitan Police and The WAVE Trust will not be effective unless the community change their mind-set. Rather than complain about the systems put in place to protect our society, we should think about how we, as people can assist in ensuring that this plague will not rise again.

Press Release from Georgina Jarrett of Indulge

‘INDULGE CELEBRITY GIFT LOUNGE’ LAUNCHES AT ‘SCREEN
NATION AWARDS’ 2007

This years film and TV award show ‘Screen Nation’ was
held at the London Hilton Metropole on
the 15th
October 2007
. The award night hosted an extra special treat for its
celebrity guests, nominees and winners namely -
Thandie Newton, Morgan Freeman, Jamie Foxx, cast from
the Bill, Eastenders, Dr Who and more, with its first
‘Bespoke Gift Service’, in the ‘Indulge Celebrity Gift
Lounge’.
‘Indulge’ is the brainchild of designer Georgina
Jarrett, who started ‘Indulge’ as a platform for
designers, artists and suppliers of unique products to
market and promote themselves and get much needed
exposure which can be limited under a tight budget.
“Having started my own leather accessories label -
‘Evoke’, sometime ago, I wanted to increase my
customer base and get some more exposure in the media.
The big boys usually use celebrities to help do that.
However, most independent creators do not have the
sort of cash required to tempt superstars in the first
place, so I have had to think outside of the box. So
we work as a co-operative under ‘Indulge’ to help
ourselves in this way“.
The ‘Indulge Lounge’ offers a great gift service to
high profile guests where participating businesses,
who are not yet commercially established, but who
produce fantastic luxury items including jewellers,
artists, designers of children’s wear, ladies fashion,
men’s clothing, accessories, footwear, skin care,
holistic therapies and more showcase their creations
at corporate and private events frequented by VIP’s
and ‘A’ list celebrities.
Participating businesses can use this opportunity to:
- Interact with high profile guests
- Speak directly with celebrities - avoiding the
middle man (i.e. publicists/agents)
- Obtain potential celebrity endorsements and tie-ins
to enhance credibility
- Increase sales and brand awareness
- Propel brand into the public domain and generate
media interest
The VIP and celebrity guests get to chill out in the
‘Indulge’ Lounge’,  meet designers,  customise the
contents of their own goody bags rather than getting
one with gifts they may not want. Or even commission
their own special pieces.
We have created ‘Indulge Lounge’ at numerous private
functions and showcased at the BBC, Barbican,
Kempinski Hotel, …..to name just a few.
Some of the participating businesses at this years’
Indulge Lounge’ in association with ‘Screen Nation
Awards’ include: Smart Heel (import from America),
Evoke - Luxury Leather Accessories, Wuchi Ltd
(Skincare), Oluremi - Unisex fashions, Leon & Eugene -
the artists, Youmewe - dresses you can wear in over 7
different ways!, ATA Designs - homeware and more.
